Tiny cabin provides off-grid digs in Norway's mountains
The result of a design-build workshop at Bergen's School of Architecture that was headed by OPA Form's Espen Folgerø, the Tubakuba (or Tuba Cube) Mountain Hub is available to anyone to use for one night, for free, but is particularly aimed at families with young kids, in a bid to instill a sense of appreciation for nature in the little ones. It's accessed by a small tunnel that brings to mind something from a fairytale.

It Looks Like Valve is Getting Into the VR Headset Game
Valve. They were once a software company known for game-changing hits in the genre of first person shooters. Then, against all odds, they managed to completely reinvent how people buy game software online. Anyone who has played a PC game in the past five years has, probably, bought that game using Steam, the software they […]

Brabus turns the Mercedes S63 into sinister, 850-hp speed machine
With a 577-hp biturbo V8 powering a 0-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds, the Mercedes S63 AMG 4Matic Coupe isn't exactly a slouch. Or at least it didn't seem that way before German tuner Brabus turned it into an out-and-out power-n-speed machine. The S63-based Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe bolts to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds and doesn't stop accelerating until the needle hits 217 mph. .. GE RFID tech turns stickers into explosives detectors
A global economy brings many benefits, but it also makes international terrorism extremely difficult to combat. With more goods passing through the world's shipping terminals and airports than ever before, hunting explosives with large, static detectors or teams of inspectors armed with detecting devices and reagents is a bottleneck that increases the chances of evasion. To help US counterterrorism efforts, GE has developed RFID stickers that act as wireless, battery-free explosives detectors that can be placed almost anywhere.

Raht Racer velomobile may let riders pedal "as fast as a car"
With their sleek shells providing both protection from the elements and an aerodynamic advantage over bicycles, human-powered velomobiles do offer an intriguing alternative to cars. Unfortunately, though, they can't go as fast as automobiles, meaning that they often still have to be ridden along the edge of the road. Minneapolis-based inventor Rich Kronfield wants to change that, with his Raht Racer. It's an electric-assist velomobile that amplifies the rider's pedaling power, reportedly allowing them to move as fast as the cars around them.

Tractica: Wearable Device Shipments to Grow Tenfold Over Seven Years
There are some out there who believe that the tablet and the smartphone, disruptive technologies that fundamentally shook the PC market, will in turn be disrupted by the rise of wearable devices. On a certain level, this makes sense, but it's going to require a pretty substantial number of devices-probably more than is seen right now-to make such an advance happen. But some project big changes in the numbers of devices to ship, and Tractica recently released a report suggesting that there are big changes afoot in the market, with 2020's shipping numbers set to blow away previous records.

Putting the world's largest and most powerful gas turbine to the test
One of the problems with building the world's largest and most powerful gas turbine is that you need to build a test bed to match. Having invested US$1 billion in its 500,000 bhp 9HA Harriet gas turbine, GE had to fork over another US$185 million to build a full-load test bed at GE Power & Water in Greenville, South Carolina that can handle the grid-busting output of Harriet... SkiTaker lets you carry your skis using your feet
Downhill skis may give you an unmatched feeling of freedom and exhilaration when you're actually skiing, but they can be quite awkward to carry when you're not on the slopes. That's why a group of Spanish entrepreneurs has created the SkiTaker system. It allows users to clip the ends of their skis onto the sides of their boots, then "walk" their skis around vaguely like upside-down stilts.

Jane offers pickup switching by touch
Even at first glance, there's something a little different about the Jane guitar from Switzerland's Pirmin Giger and Silvan Küng. It's not quite a single cut, nor is it a double cut. Its body is made up of three layers – an aluminum frame and two veneer wood panels. The back plate is not screwed in place, but is held in place by magnets and can be opened up using just a guitar pick. And its handmade humbucker pickups are selected using touch sensors rather than a 3- or 5-way pickup switch. It certainly looks like an appetizing combination that lives up to the brand name: Relish Guitars... Continue Reading Jane offers pickup switching by touch

VLT's SPHERE highlights a missing brown dwarf
The ESO has turned the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research instrument (SPHERE) towards an unusual double star with the expectation of finding an orbiting brown dwarf. Bond robot writes fancy notes – in your handwriting
While email has certainly made it much quicker and easier to keep in touch with people, there's still something really nice about receiving a tangible hand-written letter. That's why the Bond service was created. It uses a pen-holding robot to create a "hand-written" note in your handwriting, which is then snail-mailed to a recipient of your choice.

Hubble captures rare image of triple Jupiter transit
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured a rare image of a triple transit, as three of Jupiter's largest moons cast their shadows on the gas giant's planetary disk. The three moons captured in the image – Europa, Callisto and Io, were among the first celestial objects observed with a telescope, and were instrumental in debunking the long held belief that the Earth was at the center of the universe.

Paul Vo puts sustained harmony at your fingertips
Back on 2012, Paul Vo and Moog revealed a working prototype of a device that took control of acoustic string vibrations to provide a harmonic soundscape behind whatever the player was picking. After making some necessary tweaks, Vo took the newly-named Vo-96 Acoustic Synthesizer to Kickstarter for the final push to production. The campaign was successful and the product is now available to buy. Vo has now revealed a handheld single string sustainer prototype that uses the same technology as the Vo-96. Say hello to the Vo Wand... Continue Reading Paul Vo puts sustained harmony at your fingertips

JAMA Says Fitbit Makes The Most Accurate Fitness Tracker, But It’s Not The One You Think
The apparent inaccuracy of wearable fitness trackers has long bugged us, but we had been unable to put real scientific numbers to it. Fortunately, there are real researchers in the world, and they’ve established scientifically that most of the step-counting data you get from trackers is pretty bad. A letter in the Journal of the […]
Boston Dynamic introduces smaller, more kickable robot
In 2005, Boston Dynamics unveiled its robot "mule," Big Dog. Now it has a smaller, nimbler littermate called Spot that can take a good kick. Weighing in at 160 lb (72.5 kg), the electrically-powered, hydraulically-actuated, four-legged robot made its debut in a YouTube video released by the company on Tuesday...

Football (the soccer kind) teams up with table tennis in Teqball
Europeans sure love their football, don't they? When we covered Trick Kick back in 2013, we thought it'd be the last live action, football-based pub game we'd see for a long while. We were wrong. The new game of Teqball arches the ping pong table's back, pulls out the paddles and challenges players to put their football skills to work. .. V-One conductive ink printer aims to short-circuit electronic prototyping
In designing and prototyping electronic circuit boards there is no quick or simple way to produce results. Many hours of design and development need to be expended on prototype layouts along with masking, etching, and populating those boards with components. Even after all of this, just one simple layout mistake can ruin all of your work and you have to go through the entire process again. The Voltera V-One aims to change all of that with the promise of a one button, conductive ink printing system solely designed to reduce the effort in rapid, small run hardware prototyping... Fitness Beating Out Health Wearables: Not Good
Fitness wearables are all the rage, but the sector is quickly moving into ugly territory. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates hard-core medical devices, but wearable manufacturers have been pushing the envelope toward health management. It should be no surprise that the FDA is now floating a "General Wellness: Policy for Low Risk Devices," but I think the agency and the medical profession need to chart a third path between no regulation and medical devices.
The Search for a New Battery
Software is easy, hardware is hard, and batteries are damned near impossible. There’s no Moore’s Law for batteries. That’s why whispers of improvements in battery tech are so interesting and important. We bet you’ve never heard the name John Bannister Goodenough, although your life without his work would be a whole lot different without him. […]
IoS: The Internet of Sheep
The kind of connectivity that makes wearable tech happy is easy to get in urban centers. It’s harder in rural areas, although agriculture is certainly an industry that could (and does) benefit from being connected. In that vein, we saw an article the other day proposing that sheep not only be tagged, but be equipped […]
